_Your Joomla blog or news site has years of articles. Category pages show the newest first, so older articles sink out of sight and visitors leave without finding them._

**Monthly Archive** groups your Joomla or K2 articles by year and month, on an archive page and in a sidebar module. Visitors pick a month, filter by category or author, or search for a word, and open the article they came for.

It works with Joomla 4, 5 and 6, and you set it up from one settings screen, without code.

Older articles stay one click away. **Monthly Archive** lists every month that has articles, with a count beside it, and the [menu item guide](https://docs.web357.com/monthly-archive-for-joomla-or-k2-content/displaying-the-archive/) shows how to publish the archive page in a few minutes.

## Features

### 🗓️ One Archive Page for Every Year and Month

**Visitors see at a glance which months have articles, and how many.**

Create a **Monthly Archive** [menu item](https://docs.web357.com/monthly-archive-for-joomla-or-k2-content/displaying-the-archive/) and Joomla gets one page that lists every year and month with published content. Each month links to its own page with a short address such as /monthly-archive/2025/04.

- Article count beside every year and month
- Category, author and keyword filters above the list
- Newest or oldest years first, months in either order

### 📰 Article Lists with Image, Author and Reading Time

**Open a year or a month and read the articles as cards, not a bare list of titles.**

Each card shows the image, title and intro text, and you choose the details on the [Layout tab](https://docs.web357.com/monthly-archive-for-joomla-or-k2-content/configuration/layout-and-display/#article-display-options-list-of-articles).

- Date, category, author, hits and reading time, each on or off
- Ordering by date, title, author, hits or ID
- Open the article on its own page or in a modal window

![The 2025 year page with date, ordering, category and author filters, and two articles shown with an image, date, category, author and reading time](https://www.web357.com/content/images/2.-Year-page-Monthly-Archive-for-Joomla.png)

### 📄 A Minimal Layout for Text-First Sites

**Turn off the images and the meta row and the archive becomes a clean reading list.**

Set **Display Type** to **List of Articles** in the [core settings](https://docs.web357.com/monthly-archive-for-joomla-or-k2-content/configuration/main-settings/#core-settings) to show the articles directly, without the year and month list first.

- Pagination with 30 items per page by default, or unlimited
- Intro text cut to the length you set
- Only the HTML tags you allow are kept

![A list of articles from 2017 showing only the reading time, title and intro text of each article, with pagination below](https://www.web357.com/content/images/3.-Minimal-Layout-Monthly-Archive-for-Joomla.png)

### 🧭 A Sidebar Module in Three Layouts

**Put the archive in a sidebar or footer, on every page of your site.**

The [Monthly Archive module](https://docs.web357.com/monthly-archive-for-joomla-or-k2-content/archive-module/) works in any module position and links each month to the archive page.

- **Default List**, **Accordion** or **Drop Down list of Months and Years**
- Show years, months or both
- Its own include and exclude rules, separate from the archive page

![Four Monthly Archive modules side by side, the default list, a drop-down list, a months-only list and an accordion of years](https://www.web357.com/content/images/5.-Available-Modules-Monthly-Archive-for-Joomla.png)

### 🔍 Search Inside the Archive, with Matches Highlighted

**A reader looking for one article types a word and sees only the articles that contain it.**

The search box on the archive page filters by keyword together with the month, category and author. For a search box in a sidebar or inside an article, publish the [Search module](https://docs.web357.com/monthly-archive-for-joomla-or-k2-content/search-module/).

- Matching words highlighted in the results
- The Search module shows results without a page reload
- Card or compact result style

### ⚙️ Joomla Articles or K2, Filtered by State

**Choose where the articles come from and which ones count.**

Pick **Default (Joomla! Core)** or **K2** as the content type, then decide which [article states](https://docs.web357.com/monthly-archive-for-joomla-or-k2-content/configuration/main-settings/#state) appear.

- All articles, only featured, or all except featured
- Published, unpublished, archived or trashed, each on or off
- Optional titles of registered-only articles, with a login prompt for guests

### 🎛️ Choose the Filters Visitors See

**Keep the filters your readers use and hide the rest.**

The [Search Options](https://docs.web357.com/monthly-archive-for-joomla-or-k2-content/configuration/layout-and-display/#search-options) are set separately for the year and month page and for the article list page.

- Author, category and keyword fields on the archive page
- Date, order, author, category and keyword fields on the article list
- **Default List** or **Accordion** for the years and months

![The Search Options section with show or hide switches for the author, category, date, order and search text fields on the archive home page and the article list page](https://www.web357.com/content/images/7.-Settings-Monthly-Archive-for-Joomla.png)

### ✏️ Your Own Page Title and Welcome Message

**Introduce the archive in your own words.**

Set a [page title and welcome message](https://docs.web357.com/monthly-archive-for-joomla-or-k2-content/configuration/main-settings/#page-title--welcome-message) for the year and month page and another for the article list. The **%u** placeholder shows the number of articles.

- HTML allowed in the welcome message
- A back link from a month to the full archive
- Every label can be translated with Joomla language overrides

### 🛡️ Comment Counts, SEO Tags and Own-Articles Mode

**Fine-tune what search engines and logged-in users get.**

The [Advanced Settings](https://docs.web357.com/monthly-archive-for-joomla-or-k2-content/configuration/advanced-settings/) tab adds comment counts and robots tags, and can limit the archive to each user's own articles.

- Comment count beside titles from JComments or K2
- Robots and nofollow settings for the archive page
- **Show only own articles**, with user groups that still see everything

## Good to know

- **🔎 A search box anywhere on your site**: Publish the [Search module](https://docs.web357.com/monthly-archive-for-joomla-or-k2-content/search-module/) in a sidebar or drop it inside an article with a loadposition tag. Results appear in the same card style as the archive, without a page reload.
- **🗂️ Archive only what you choose**: Include or exclude years, months, categories, authors or single articles under [Include/Exclude Content](https://docs.web357.com/monthly-archive-for-joomla-or-k2-content/configuration/content-filtering/), for example one archive per blog category.
- **🖼️ An image for every article**: The archive uses the intro image, then the full article image, then the first image in the text, then a fallback image. You set the order in [image prioritization](https://docs.web357.com/monthly-archive-for-joomla-or-k2-content/guides/configuring-image-prioritization/).

## Frequently asked questions

### Which Joomla versions are supported?

The current release supports **Joomla 4, 5 and 6** and needs **PHP 7.4** or newer, as listed in the [requirements](https://docs.web357.com/monthly-archive-for-joomla-or-k2-content/installation/#requirements). It also needs the free Web357 Framework plugin. All Web357 Joomla extensions are Joomla 6 ready.

### Is Monthly Archive free?

No. It is a commercial extension and there is no free edition. Each [plan](https://www.web357.com/monthly-archive-joomla-component-module/pricing) covers **1, 3, 5 or unlimited sites** and includes 1 year of updates and support, with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

### Does it work with K2?

Yes. Set **Content Type** to **K2** in the [core settings](https://docs.web357.com/monthly-archive-for-joomla-or-k2-content/configuration/main-settings/#core-settings) and the archive lists K2 items instead of Joomla articles. Comment counts can come from K2 comments or JComments.

### What do the archive addresses look like?

With Search Engine Friendly URLs on, a month page has an address made of your menu item alias, the year and the month, for example **/monthly-archive/2025/04**. You can also set the robots and nofollow tags of the archive in the [SEO settings](https://docs.web357.com/monthly-archive-for-joomla-or-k2-content/configuration/advanced-settings/#seo-settings).

### Can I show an archive for one category only?

Yes. Select that category under **Include Categories** and leave the date fields empty. The [category guide](https://docs.web357.com/monthly-archive-for-joomla-or-k2-content/guides/restricting-archives-by-category/) shows the steps, and each module can have its own rules.

### Can I change or translate the labels?

Yes. The page title and welcome message are settings, and every other label, such as the filter names, can be changed with Joomla language overrides. The [translation guide](https://docs.web357.com/monthly-archive-for-joomla-or-k2-content/guides/translating-text-with-language-overrides/) lists the language constants.

### What happens after the subscription expires?

The extension keeps working on your sites. You can continue using the version you downloaded, but new releases and support stop until you renew, which you can do at any time from your Web357 account at the current [plan prices](https://www.web357.com/monthly-archive-joomla-component-module/pricing).
